Blake (Michael Pitt) is an introspective artist whose success has left him in a lonely place where livelihoods rest on his shoulders and old friends regularly tap him for money and favors. His inner turmoil leads him to seek refuge from his own life at his wooded home. As its title indicates, Last Days depicts the last couple of days in the life of rock star Blake, living out his tortured mind in a secluded home in the middle of a forest. Gus Van Sant portrays this artist in his vulnerable solitary state, without relating any genuine revelation about the last days of Kurt Cobain: "The inspiration for Last Days was not so much the immediate event, but the ensuing questions of what happened." The director chose Michael Pitt, whom he had already worked with in Finding Forrester, to incarnate this ghost of a character.
