Synopsis
The surrealist-infused films of veteran Gilles Carle (La vraie nature de Bernadette) have been called "a display case for the fantasies, formative myths, and political preoccupations of the artistic intelligentsia of his generation in Quebec" (David Clandfield). Pudding chemeur, his latest offering, is a cynical comedy that mocks the current commerce in faith, hope and happiness by unscrupulous sects, preachers, and self-styled gurus -- and breaks just about every Quebec taboo in the process. In east Montreal, a high priestess of the streets and her prince go to war against poverty and injustice, offering the downtrodden an infallible recipe for happiness: a mix of endless love and the odd miracle or two. Their mission lands them in hot water with a gang of mobsters, but they manage to escape -- only to find the road ahead full of yet more traps
